HISTORY

In the late 1930s, conventional thick wool and canvas became heavy and slow to dry when exposed to sea air, so the lightweight cotton twill Drill Rich trousers seen here were adopted. This rare model was produced for just under three years, from when it was officially adopted in 1937 (commonly known as "M37") until 1939, just before the outbreak of war, and its undyed, off-white color was chosen to ensure both visibility and workability on the decks of docks and shipyards at the time. However, with the start of the war, cotton imports became difficult. The cotton version was short-lived, as the HBT linen fabric was used instead, which was made from flax that was easily procured domestically. Due to the pressure on the front lines and supply routes, the old models were used up to the last, and most were scrapped after being heavily used and patched up where damaged. It is said that less than one-tenth of the new HBTs remained by the end of the war, and the number of units remaining is extremely limited. This item is a rare survivor. The lightweight yet tightly woven twill fabric has a moderate density that repels sea breezes, and details unique to the early model, such as the drawstring hem and suspender buttons, are still intact. While it is workwear that was close to the daily life of deck crewmen, it is also a piece that tells the story of a turning point where material conditions and technological innovation during wartime intersected. Please enjoy this gem, which combines historical background and rarity, and is highly valuable as a collection piece.

DETAIL

The deep high waistband has six metal buttons and a button fly. The front has a watch pocket and the back has a patch pocket, giving it a simple yet sophisticated military design. The hem has a drawstring, a practical detail that keeps out water and wind during harsh sea work.

CONDITION

There are repairs on the right front bodice, button fly and crotch area. The original cupro-nickel metal buttons are still intact, the stamps on the inside of the waist and faint markings on the tags remain, and the drawstrings at the hem and waist are still intact, making for a very good condition.
